At the new server

The Core Dump is now safely ensconced at its new home, Burnaby at TextDrive. This should be the last time for a while that I’ll move the site, as I signed up for their lifetime hosting. So as long as they stay in business and keep providing great service, that’s where this site will be. Hopefully this will be a long time.

The move was not too painful, except for a few hours wasted hunting down a malfunctioning .htaccess file that was throwing a spanner in the works.

Some of the articles look a bit ugly, as MySQL has some … ahem … interesting issues with non-ascii characters like curly quotes. I’m going to need to find some simple way of dealing with that.

One of the reasons for moving to shared hosting is that I don’t want to spend my free time doing system administration, and with TextDrive I get regular backups and patches and minions to watch the health of the server, so I can spend my time doing the fun bits. Plus it’s nice to have minions.

Another reason is that while Temeryx, my old faithful G4/450, has been steady as a rock, it is a bit sluggish for Ruby on Rails, and it was getting to be time to build a new machine to put in its place. That would have cost more than the TextDrive lifetime hosting in itself, and would have eaten up a weekend to build the machine, install FreeBSD or Fedora Core and set up web and mail and firewall and what have you.

So here we are. Onward and upward.
