Two mystifying sayings from my grandmother
When I was a child in Sweden, one of my grandmothers had two sayings she would use as padding whenever conversation died. Ever since then, I’ve used the same phrases for the same purpose, and I just realized I have no idea what they mean.
The first one is, “Då ska vi se, sa den blinde till den döve.” Which translates to “Let’s see, said the blind to the deaf.”
And, “Ja mina vänner, sa han som inga vänner hade.” Roughly, “Well my friends, said the man who had no friends.”
Again, these were just time fillers and never had anything to do with the conversation that was currently paused. I’ve known and occasionally used these phrases my entire life without thinking about it, but now it’s growing annoying that I just don’t know what they mean. Is it a koan or a bleak Swedish commentary on the futility of existence?
Should have asked. You always should have asked.
